Tackling homophobic, biphobic and transphobic bullying in Northamptonshire schools was the focus of a free one day conference held at the Sunley Management Centre, on Thursday 5th February, attended by over 80 delegates.

‘I’m Still Me!’ was organised by Northamptonshire LGBT Partnership, comprising of Voluntary Impact Northamptonshire, NBC, FAN LGBT Community Network, Youth Works Kettering, The Lowdown, NHFT, Northampton School for Boys, Northampton College and NCC and Stonewall, the national campaigning & education organisation.

Workshops explored ways of sharing good practice and learning and looked at issues for both primary and secondary schools. Members of the Lowdown’s ‘Out There’ LGBT Youth Group facilitated two sessions on supporting young people coming out, Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service (CAMHS) looked at trans issues and pupils from Northampton School for Boys presented a powerful drama piece to the whole conference. NBC’s LGBT Forum also had the opportunity to show their new You Tube video promoting the ‘Straight Allies Northampton’ campaign, encouraging non-gay people  to ‘come out’ as Straight Allies who are willing to challenge discrimination and prejudice on behalf of their LGBT friends, family and colleagues.
